Kinship care?

I’m about to have my nephew stay with me for three years (he’ll be 18). I kinda know what to expect and how to get resources. We’re in Alameda County in California. What suggestions do you have for me and maybe resources in my area?

  1. call your caseworker and find out.  why would you be taking an 18 year old for 3 years why cant he take care of himself.  if there are other issues then you may qualify for kinship care but if he is a normal 17 year old you will be hard pressed to get anything past his 18th birthday.

  2. Via Foster Care there are several programs and will help until 18 or even 21 if he's in school. There's Kinship,Yokum and if you are thinking of adopting there is AAP (adoption assistance program) I also found Family to Family in your county. And a youth program.

    GOOD LUCK

  3. l'm not really sure what (if any) financial assistance you would get with your nephew being 18.  Will he be working, and able to contribute for some room/board?  l've included this link for you to try, but l would suggest calling your local CPS or equivalent agency and asking them.  Good luck with your nephew!

  4. If he's 18 already, then you won't get any assistance.  But if he's 15 and will be 18 in 3 years you might be eligible for some financial and or medical insurance for him.  But every state has different laws. In Wisconsin you would qualify for medical but would only get financial help if he was placed with you by the courts and not just an agreement between you and his parents.

  5. Is the kinship placement occurring thru the state?  If so, the Dept of Human Services should be able to offer you assistance with some of your questions.  Our son was in kinship care with his biological grandparents before we adopted him.  Although it was in the state of NJ, he did receive additional monies and medical care.  It is worth looking into for you.

    Good luck.

  6. It is hard to answer that question with out knowing the circumstances but the one thing to remember is that you are not his mom just love him for what ever reason he is living with you and do you best to install some or continue with the positive values
