Kiradech Aphibarnrat secures his maiden victory in SAIL Open of Asian Tour
The Asian Tour event of the SAIL Open finally concluded today at the scenic par-72, Delhi golf course designed by Arnold Palmer. There were joys for a few players and disappointment for some. The Thai Kiradech Aphibarnrat displayed his skills on the final
day by standing up tall against pressure and lifting his maiden victory.
Kiradech is just 21-years-old and changed his playing status to professional three years back. He started the day placed at second and played flawless golf during the final day. The youngster had an impressive final round score of four-under par, 68 which
was enough for him to take a one shot victory against the overnight leader Siddikur.
Aphibarnrat was all smiling with his first win coming at the right time of his career. His score card showed six birdies and two bogeys. The two lost strokes came on hole numbers 6 and 16th. The youngster ended his day in a classic style by making
a birdie on the finishing 18th. Kiradech was excited with his title and is confident of continuing this streak. He had a score of sixteen-under par, 272 after four rounds.
As for the over-night leader, Siddikur of Bangladesh, it was a day of disappointment. He just failed to maintain momentum in the final round and finished one shot behind the winner. The 26-year-old had a chance to go in a play-off on the par-5, 18th
and only needed a birdie. His par on the final hole was not enough for him to match the winner’s score.
Siddikur played well throughout all four days and had under par scores. It was a matter of holding nerves on the final day and making it through. He was disappointed by the opportunity which came his way of winning his second Asian Tour title. Siddikur had
a four round score of fifteen-under par, 273.
Ajeetesh Sandhu of the host club finished at the third spot, as he had a steady final round score of two-under par. Sandhu finished the championship with a four round aggregate score of fourteen-under par, 274 and two behind the front-runner.
Much was expected from India’s rising star Gaganjeet Bhullar. He was wayward in the final round and posted a forgettable round of two-over par, 74. Bhullar’s score card shows his problems which he had with his swing and putting.
Aphibarnrat picked up the championship trophy along with the winner’s cheque.
