Kirby is smoking and breaking belts

my kirby is smoking when I try to shampoo the carpets. It burned through two belts. One was an older belt, the other was brand new. I hooked it up just exactly the same as I have before and dont understand why its doing this and dont want to waste more belts. Can anyone help?
