Kirk Nieuwenhuis continues with an amazing show in absence of Andres Torres - MLB Update
By the time Andres Torres suffered a calf injury at the start of the season, New York Mets had to call up Kirk Nieuwenhuis from the Triple-A Buffalo as a replacement. The fact expectations from the Mets were already low, as injury of their premier centre-fielder
was seen as the last nail in the coffin.
However, that was not to be as not only did Nieuwenhuis perform tremendously well, the whole side looked improved, in stark contrast to their fate in Spring Training.
Hitting homers and catching miraculously while standing as the centre-fielder are a mark of a player with immense talent.
Even with an incredible contribution he made to the side, he is not sure whether his position will stay intact as Torres returns. Calling that prospect out of his control, he says he will work for so long as the management decides him to do so.
“It’s not my call,” he said. “It’s up to other people. I just go out there and play.”
The fact Torres brings so much to the Mets’ offence, management is going to give him a go right away on his return from injury. Torres had a valuable contribution in season opening game against the Atlanta Braves.
The kind of form he looked in, in his first game was indicative of the potential performances he may have had. Therefore regardless of Nieuwenhuis’ homers and fine plays, he remains one of the players Mets desperately look forward to the season comeback.
In any case, Mets can be cheerful of the fact that they have seen the talent which was untested previously. With Nieuwenhuis turning out to be a real find of the season, manager can have his budgetary constraints eased up when he will prepare for the off-season
purchases.
Starter Jonathon Niese was all-praise of Nieuwenhuis after the game against San Francisco Giants.
“We all knew he had a lot of talent,” said Mets starter Jonathon Niese. “It’s good to see he is showing it.”
One of the biggest problems he may face down the line is that of complacency, especially in the face of all-round praises he has managed to draw. This is something he will look to guard against as he progresses further in the season.
