Kirsten Ogden and Ellie-Jean Coffey prevail in CHIKO Pro Junior Quarter-finals – Surfing News
Australia’s Kirsten Ogden and Ellie-Jean Coffey prevailed in their respective Quarter-finals of CHIKO Pro Junior women’s division at Newcastle’s Surfest that continued at the Merewether Beach in New South Wales, Australia, on Sunday, March 11.
Ogden got the better of her compatriot Audrey Styman-Lane in the third Quarter-final, while Coffey defeated her fellow Australian Philippa Anderson in the fourth Quarter-final to make her way into the next stage of the 4-Star Association of Surfing Professionals
(ASP) Women’s Qualifying event.
With some of the most promising young female talent from around the world converging to Merewether to compete for the $20,000 prize money and coveted ASP Junior rating points on offer, the competition featured a series of thrilling battles.
The size of the waves had also improved considerably, decreasing from an intimidating six feet to clean and rippable three feet. The stage was set for exciting Quarter-final battles as the surfers got ready to take each other on to confirm their place in
the Semi-finals.
Ogden and Styman-Lane had managed to survive the early rounds of the event by showcasing impressive skills. Facing each other in the third Quarter-finals, both of them were expected to give each other a tough time.
However, their clash turned out to be a low-scoring one as they struggled to find good waves. Styman-Lane in particular evidently succumbed to the conditions, managing to catch only three waves with 2.50 and 3.10 being the best score.
Ogden, on the other hand, showed relatively more comfort during the course of the battle and eventually finished with a heat-total of 9.50 points, which included a 4.25 and 5.25-point wave, to claim top honours and advance through into the Semi-finals.
The fourth Quarter-final saw Coffey and Anderson in an intense battle to step closer to the title shot. Both the surfers began their charge right in the opening minutes of the heat, with Coffey posting a 6.50 on the score-board while Anderson taking the
lead with a 7.50-point wave.
As the heat entered the final minutes of the heat, Anderson added an additional 6.00 points to her account for a heat-total of 13.50 points. However, Coffey stepped up and managed to earn an 8.50 off her second business-wave that took her to a heat-total
of 15.00 points. The last-minute turned out to be a decisive one, earning Coffey the win and consequently confirming her spot in the Semi-finals.
