Kirsty Coventry and Suzaan van Biljon impress in Mozambique: 2011 All African Games – Day three
Day three of the 2011 All African Games saw several impressive and intriguing performances at the Zimpeto National Stadium, in Maputo, Mozambique, on Wednesday, September 7. The session of the meet conducted the Women’s 100m back-stroke and 50m breast-stroke
final heats.
In the Women’s 100m back-stroke final heat, Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry hit the wall in 1 minute and 00.86 seconds to win the gold medal. That time of Zimbabwean swimmers was short of her previous best meet time of 1 minute and 01.28 seconds, set back in
the 2007. After the swim, Coventry was delighted due to her individual splash. In the corresponding race, Karin Prinsloo grabbed the silver medal on the podium by submitting a striking mark of 1 minute and 01.46 seconds.
Meanwhile, Amel Melih of Algeria snared the bronze medal on the podium by submitting an eye catching time of 1 minute and 07.27 seconds and Rene D Warnes of South Africa was placed fourth in a time of 1 minute and 07.56 seconds. Fella Bennaceur of Algeria
settled fifth in a time of 1 minute and 08.06 seconds, while Jessica Cossa of Mozambique finished sixth in a time of 1 minute and 08.19 seconds.
Kirsten Lapham of Zimbabwe finished seventh in a time of 1 minute and 09.48 seconds, whereas, Talisa Lanoe of Kenya earned eighth place honours in a time of 1 minute and 09.92 seconds.
In the meantime, Suzaan van Biljon of South Africa took home the Women’s 50m breast-stroke title on the podium by submitting an impressive time of 32.88 seconds. Mozambique's Mariam Corsini took home the silver medal on the stage by posting a unique time
of 33.74 seconds, while Nigeria's Racheal Tonjor picked bronze medal in a stunning time of 33.81 seconds.
In the corresponding splash, Sara Lajnef of Tunisia earned fourth place honours in a time of 34.07 seconds. Daniela Lindermeier of Namibia was placed fifth in 34.90 seconds, while Samantha Welch of Zimbabwe earned sixth place honours in a time of 35.04 seconds.
Muminah Coonelly of South Africa wound up seventh in a time of 35.86 seconds. Finally, Melia Mghezzi Bekhouche of Algeria earned eighth spot in 36.14 seconds.
All the participants of the meet took a huge appreciation due to their scintillating performances, while the winners were awarded accolades after the session’s completion.
