Kirsty Gilmour secures Women’s Singles trophy in 2012 Polish Open – Badminton News
Scotland’s spirited shuttler Kirsty Gilmour continued her unbeatable run in the Polish Open and claimed the crown after unseating Riou Panuga in the final round on September 2, 2012.
The match-up ended in just two sets as third seeded Kirsty took just 30 minutes to outclass the lower ranked British campaigner.
Women’s Singles expert, Kirsty played with great precision and registered an overwhelming result of 21-12 and 21-12.
Riou Panuga, who showed commendable craft in previous rounds of this International Series, could not rise from the dust and surrendered tamely.
The victorious shuttler laid the foundation of her dominance straight away in the opening game when she claimed the first match point with a notable lead in the final margin.
In the first half of the set, Kirsty was a bit sluggish as she could not move swiftly across the court and dropped many valuable points.
However, she did not take much time to gain right momentum and started making progress after 0-4 total. She narrowed the gap at 3-5 and then prevailed in five uninterrupted rallies to establish a decent lead.
Though, Riou showed some panache just before the interval but she could not stop her rival to place a respectable figure of 11-9.
Later part of the game was completely dominated by Kirsty who cornered her challenger with a series of well placed strokes.
The Scottish shuttler mounted pressure with five consecutive points and then smacked Riou down with a staggering knock of 21-12.
Next game started in an interesting manner as the suppressed British player took off in perfect manner but she lacked good finishing skills which ultimately cost her top spot on the victory stand.
Riou looked in prime touch in preliminary stage of the set as she ruled the court in four nonstop rallies in the beginning and then widened the gap with 7-3 margin.
At this stage, Kirsty switched on the best and counter-balanced the situation with a strong backlash.
She bagged the first half of the set with a decent total of 11 and then raised her hands as champion by registering an impressive 21-12 score on the board.
