Ok, we are thinking of repainting our kitchen cabinet...

How would we go about doing so? I think there is some type of sillant on it... what do we use to get paint to stick...

(for the wall color it is... would jet black be good?)

  1. It's only oak wood, not like it's some rare species of wood or something. If you want to paint them go for it. but first you need wash & sand (tsp with hot water, then scuff sand 180 grit). Next remove all doors & drawers and apply oil base undercoat, then when dry lightly sand and apply oil base enamel finish. what ever color you want, darker colors require additional coats to cover.

    good luck

  2. Jet black is a nice color. But it has to natch your kitchen.Like you can't have a black cabinet and have have a light brown table. It would flash.Try out other colors too. There might be other colors you like too.So check out other colors too before it's too late.Hope I helped.Good luck!

  3. Those are nice cabinets! You just need different hardware. You'd be surprised what a difference that can make. Check out Restoration Hardware for some cool k***s and pulls if you go that route.  But if you're determined to paint them, clean them with TSP (get it at Home Depot),  sand them, prime them, then paint them.

  4. First you will need to get a deglosser and wipe down the whole cabinet. Take off the door and hinges. Use water-based KILZ-IT on it....probably 2 coats......let dry and paint with an enamel paint. Iuse a foam brush and small foam roller. You can place the tray, roller and brush in a large trash bag in the fridge until the first coat of paint is dry and do a second coat the next day.

Jet black is not a good color for the walls. I went with black cabinets and silver grey walls.

  5. Instead of painting those beautiful oak cabinets, why not paint the walls a color that will enhance them?  The cool tone you have now doesn't play well with the oak.  A warm beige, pale yellow, warm terra cotta would look good.  Then, as someone else suggested, new hardware, and the whole thing will be lovely.

If you paint the cabinets, you will never be able to get them back looking as good as they do now.

  6. Those are beautiful oak cabinets. Once you paint them they are going to be ruined. If you do paint them I'd use and epoxy paint. It's much "harder" and once dried the paint wont easily scratch or chip.
