Question:

Kitchen floors versus kitchen counter tops...?

I am remodeling my kitchen and I am wondering...is it ok for me to have a light colored floor tile, a spice colored cabinet and a dark charcoal counter top? I am feeling a little overwhelmed with all of the decisions and I don't want to make a choose I'll regret. Any opinions?

  1. hi! well that kind of reminds me of the fashion rule : dark on bottom, light on top. as i'm picturing it in my head, it seems like it might look too top-heavy. but a light colored countertop would balance out the floor. or a darker colored floor would balance out the countertop. see what i mean? i prefer darker floors for this reason!

  2. I think it would be fine & have done similar things in the past.  As a kitchen & bath designer, I am a firm believer in choosing what you like.  I often use darker counter top colors as they contract with popular mid-toned or lighter cabinets choices to provide contrast - and they can be quite forgiving.  If the floor tile you have your eye on is light, then that will provide some contract to the cabinets as well  You don't want the color to be too much the same as it might look washed out.  You look for complementary options.  If you are dark on the countertop, then i would look for something light on the backsplash - maybe even the same as the floor tile but in a different size.  It will also lighten it up in that space a bit.  I tend to shy away from floors in the really dark tones b/c they show a lot of lint, etc.

Go to this link & click on "room designer tool".  http://www2.dupont.com/Surfaces/en_US/pr... Choose a sample room witha  light floor, because floors are one of the options you can't change.  Tehn choose a cabinet color & countertop color to try out.  Also, check out cabinetry websites & go to the galleries to get ideas on what they pair with similar colored cabinets.  I put some links below for cab sites.

    Good Luck!
