Kitchen space regulations

I have added a new kitchen and the planner has omitted a small unit and drawer stating to me kitchen regulations of space, is this right? I can find no information on it, and I think he is having me on.

  1. I am a kitchen designer.  Where did he eliminate the unit (next to the stove, refrigerator, end of a run of cabinets)?  Are you in the US?

We account for 36" of clearance for walkways & space etc.  For instance, if you have a peninsula, you need 36" from the end of the peninsula to the next fixed item (wall, other cabinets, etc).  This is for a comfortable walkway.  Same idea for an island - we plan for 36" of clearance around all sides.  Is this what you are referring to?  This is also part of most building codes (of course every municipality has nuances) if you were to get an inspection.

  2. There are city codes regarding fire hazards, number of electrical outlets, etc. but what the planner is saying doesn't sound right to me. Why don't you ask them, "What space regulations?" Tell them you'd like to know if the small unit and drawer are not allowed due to city building codes and see what they say.
