Question:

Kitchenware help needed - what is this thing called?

I used to have a saucepan with an extra thing that sat on top of it. This extra thing looked like a double boiler except that where a doubleboiler has a solid bottom, this thing had holes in the bottom which would allow the steam from the saucepan to travel up through it.

I used to use it to steam whole heads of broccoli at once.

Anyway, it disappeared during a move and I need to replace it. I've been to several stores and no one has anything like it.

Does anyone know what it's called or where I can buy one?

  1. Its called a steamer.just replace with a collender

  2. I have one which came in my pot set, it is a double boiler steamer you should be able to get one at any pot store. Mine is stainless steel and I have had it since 1985 and still going strong.

  3. Yup, it is indeed a steamer. Most colanders are not made to take the heat a steamer inset is, so rather than improvise and ruin your colander, you should replace your steamer insert with something designed to do the same job. There are cheap replacement steaming devices available in kitchen stores or places that sell housewares. These little gadgets have wide blades that fold closed or fan open to accommodate a variety of different sized pots.  The steamer insert works much, much better at keeping water off your food, but the gizmo does a good job if you don't overfill.

  4. It's a steamer basket. You can find different types at kitchen stores that will for in dutch ovens to smaller pots. Try Bed Bath and Beyond, Linens N Things and Annas Linens.~~

  5. I use a Black and Decker Steamer (it's electric) and it is wonderful.  I know it's not exactly what you're looking for, but it will do what you need it to do.  Good Luck!
