Question:

Kitten Recently Dewormed, but still has Diarrhea?

I took my 8 week old male kitten to the vet last week for the first time. He received all the normal vaccines and was dewormed (using Strongid..I think it's called). However, now after the vet visit, it seems like he is having a lot more diarrhea. He doesn't go anymore frequently (about 2-3x a day), but everytime he does go to the bathroom, his p**p is really runny. There is no blood in the stool and he is a happy, healthy kitten otherwise (just as playful and sleeps/eats/acts the way a normal kitten does). Also, I feed him wellness kitten chow, which is a premium quality food. Any idea what it could be?

I'm going to call the vet tomorrow and make another appointment, but any feedback from qualified or experienced people on here would be a great help! Thanks.

  1. A few things can be going on with your kitten.

    1) You just acquired him, and you're probably feeding him something different from what he's used to eating. A high-quality name brand food such as Royal Canin will have kitten formula diets that are enriched with features to help with transitional diet intolerance.

    2) He was dewormed, meaning the vet either assumed or could prove that he had some sort of intestinal parasite. Intestinal parasites, such as hookworms and roundworms can cause intestinal upset, which may not make itself known until the parasite load is extremely high.

    3) Stress from vaccinating and excessive handling, travel, etc. can definitely cause diarrhea.

Your kitten has been through and will go through a lot. Definitely consult your veterinarian. A mild antibiotic, plus some intestinal supplementation may be in order for your little one, in order to get him 'over the hump', so to speak. Also ask about a gentle diet for a few days. Don't feed milk or kitten formula as these are far too rich for a kitten to tolerate and may exacerbate the problem.

    Best of luck.

  2. We had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. So we went to petcetera and bought this thing called beneback. It stops the diarrhea. The diarrhea doesnt stop after the cat is dewormed, it means hes not digesting, so i recommend beneback.
