Hi ok I have a house thats beside these woods. And I have been hearing a kitten meowing in there and I think that the kitten might be hurt because he/she is meowing so loud that you can almost hear it inside the house! And so I walked into those little woods out there and I saw just a glimpse of the kitten, calico and soooo tiny! And I think it could be hurt! It was almost inside, sort of inside a log but there was a big bee buzzing over it and so I ran out of there before it stung me. And then, after about an hour the kitten had moved to the other side of the woods and I could hear its loud meows again. And I wanted to help it. So I walked out there and tried to get to the kitten from around the woods, and I was running through the field and I almost stepped on a fat gray snake that was slithering right in front of my feet! So I ran back to my house because I am terrified of snakes. This all happened about an hour ago and I think the cat is still meowing and I'm scared that the snake will get the kitten! My older sister is telling me to stay away, my friend on the phone called me an idiot, and another friend that I called about it didn't give a hoot and said she had to go because she was baby-sitting! What should I do? Please help! P.S. I'm 12.

  1. Definitely get an adult to get the kitten and call animal protective services or take the cat in.  Having a snake around is a little frightening since it can kill the kitten (not a pretty sight).

Good for you for caring.  Make sure the little baby is safe.

  2. I just noticed that you are only 12.  You should have someone older to help you out with this.  Ask your sister again, or your parents to help you.  You aren't likely to meet the bee or the snake again.  Wear leather shoes or boots and jeans if you are worried about the snake.

You didn't say what area you are in, so I don't know what kind of snake it might be, but it is probably gone by now.

I'm guessing that these woods are not a dangerous place if they are small enough for you to go around.

If you go back for the kitten, try wearing gloves, in case it tries to scratch and bite.  If it isn't tame enough to pick it up, you can start leaving  a little milk for it and tame it gradually.  Good luck!

  3. Call animal control to catch the kitten for you.

  4. You shouldn't be in the woods by yourself - you could be hurt seriously and no one would know you were there.  You won't be able to catch a feral cat, and if you do, they will scratch and bite.  If they have rabies, you will have to get shots that are quite painful, and since it sounds like it is feral, it's a guarantee that it has not had its rabies or distemper shots.  Leave it alone, and have your mom or dad call animal control to come get it.  If they won't do it (some SPCA's won't pick up cats) then ask them if they can give your mom or dad the number to a homeless cat shelter, and they may be able to help.

Unfortunately we can't help all animals, your heart is in the right place - but now let your parents take over.
