Kitten eats kitty litter?

I have a 4 week old kitten who is still on formula. every time he goes in the litterbox, he keeps eating the litter!

We tried to feed him hard kitten food, but he has no interest in that... only formula and kitty litter. Can this make him sick? How do we get him to stop?

  1. Make sure it's not clumping litter.

    That's very dangerous to eat.

Otherwise just try to discourage him from eating it.  It's not uncommon for kittens to eat litter, a little shouldn't mess him up.

Get him some wet kitten food and offer that.  If he doesn't figure it out then put a little on his face near his mouth, when he licks it off to keep clean he should figure out that it's tasty.

    good luck!

  2. That is not good. You should get him spayed. That may be why. He is still so young though, it may hurt him. Try just putting an old towel in the litter box instead of litter. He can't eat the towel. But only leave it in there until he is spayed. If it doesn't stop, talk to the vet. I am a vet, but I can't really tell you, unless I examine him.

    Hope it helps!

  3. maybe its just caus eits a kitten talk to the vet though ask them ,..

  4. oooo that is bad. he could get messed up bad. you should take him to the vet

  5. Yes, if its clay litter it can do some serious harm to your cat's digestive system. Remove the litter from the box at once and try either shredded newspaper (cheap and efficient but will need replacing DAILY) or you can try a brand called Yesterdays News. This is made from recycled newspapers and is in a pellet form. I really doubt the kitten will try to eat that. In the meantime, try Tender Vittles instead of dry cat food. It may be that the dry chunks are too hard for his young teeth.

  6. yes,it can!I advice,take it to the vet!

  7. ooo, so not good.  That could really mess them up, especially so young, that could kill him!

  8. It can kill him, as clay litters have cement in them- that's what makes them clump.  It will clump in his intestines and he can die.

I highly recommend Swheat Scoop cat litter - it is wheat based, clumps and is much better at odor control than clay litters.  If your kitten were to ingest it, at least he could digest it and pass it.

Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but well worth it for the health of your entire family.  When we switched, our cat that sneezed and gagged frequently, stopped.  Our home is less dusty also.

I don't know why cats eat litter - I always think it must be something lacking in their food that they get from the litter.  Try some quality soft cat food- the Purina lines are well regarded it seems.  Or Natural Balance.

But make the switch to a healthier litter your top priority!

  9. Yes it can make him sick. However how sick depends on the type of kitty litter you use. Scent control litter would be the worst.

If kitty keeps doing it, replace the litter with sand. it will be a little more expensive however it will be better for kitty until she grows up

  10. If you're using a clumping litter, it is very dangerous for him.  The litter can form clumps in his intestines, and cause blockages.  Until he's old enough to learn not to eat it, use either plain clay litter (it's the stuff in bags) or an alternative litter like World's Best or Sweat Scoop.
