Question:

Kitten got into my older cats prescription medicine?

My older cat is on pills for Feline Hyperthyroidism, and my kitten managed to eat one before I could stop him. It's an anti-thyroid pill.

He's aprox 5 weeks old.

Will anything bad happen to him? Any way to fix things?

PLEASE NOTE: I cannot bring him to a vet, as there are none open due to Labour Day. None will be open for the next couple days, and there are NO emergency vets here. Not even in the neighbouring cities. Don't give stupid answers like "oh take him to the vet." I'm not stupid, I know I should - but I can't.

  1. i doubt that the tablet will hurt him,but keep a eye on him..but if you want you can give the kitten a bit of salty water to make him sick and bring the tablet up.if its been hours now since he ate it and he wasn't sick he will be ok.

  2. Follow JC's advice and call the pet hotline (vet's or aspca).  Depending on the dosage of the pill, it could do some damage to his thyroid (he's a kitten after all).

I wouldn't try giving him hydrogen peroxide either unless instructed by a real vet - not just somebody answering questions on the internet (how do you know they aren't making it up just to sound smart or to cause intentional harm?)

And to everybody that thinks he'll be fine:  Would you say that to your best friend whose toddler just ate an adult dose of human meds?  If so, I feel sorry for your friend.  Do you know how many kids die every year from that?  Lots.

  3. I'm not an expert but I'd be surprised if any serious complications arose from this aside from some gastrointestinal upset. Assuming a normal dose for a large cat isn't like half a pill or something, one pill shouldn't be enough to do much harm. Just keep a close eye on him and make sure he's still eating/drinking/eliminating regularly.

  4. i don't think anything serious could happen if the kitten only took 1 of the pills but keep a eye on him and make sure he dosent throw up anything other than hair and if he uses the litterbox make sure his stool is firm and not diarhea if so i would look in a phone book and look for any # u can and try talking to a vet if u can

  5. Tapizole/methimazole?  It surely isn't good for him but i don't think it's really serious.  Most vets even if closed have some sort of instructions on their answering machines about what to do in the event of an emergency.  There is always the ASPCA's poison line at (888) 426-4435. They can answer your questions but they do require a credit card.  They'd be the best thing to call if you cannot reach your vet.

Why is it so hard to pill a cat, yet a kitten will eat a pill that they are not supposed to?

  6. It may be too late for this but you can try to induce vomiting.  Try to get a little bit of hydrogen peroxide into his mouth and make him swallow (blow on his face).  This should make him vomit within 5 minutes, if it doesn't you can repeat it once more.  I've never had to do it for a cat so it may be quite difficult.  Good luck.
