Question:

Kitten has separation anxiety?

So, in the morning when I wake up, I feed my kitten. She'll be all into eating it in the living room, but as soon as I leave to go to the bathroom to brush my teeth, she's meowing hysterically at the door. She's about 3 1/2 months old. Does she have some kind of separation anxiety? Would this have anything to do with her starting life as a feral kitten?

  1. I wouldn't say that it is exactly separation anxiety. I have 2 cats myself and they both just cannot stand it when the bathroom door is shut. We just leave it open a crack, and taught them how to put their front paws on it and watch it open so they could come in. All we did to "teach" them, was close a door so it was only open a crack and put their front paws on it. They both saw how that opened the door immediately and have never forgotten, after showing them the one time, how to open it.

  2. yes, it is separation anxiety. but, you dont take them to a shrink, you just leave the bathroom door open, or feed her in the bathroom.

    she loves you.

  3. I think what happens at least in my household is that once I start to run my shower, they know you are about to start the routine which is Leaving For The Day! and they are trying to tell you that they do not wish you to leave.

So if you explain to her that you are leaving in order to get the cat food for her, I think she and all cats are intelligent enough to understand why it is that you are leaving every day. and I think it helps reassure them.

They are more inclined to understand what it is you are doing if you simply tell them and then they understand through telepathy or however they do it. .  I would say, that she is asking you a question at the door  and not wanting to be left alone for the day.  Being feral and separated from her mama, I can tell you, is probably the only way she is tame for you now.  Becuase if they stay with their mom, as ferals, they will hang their mother (if she lets them) for up to a year (in close proximity) and even longer if they are given the chance to (some moms kind of shrug them off, and some moms are more Hands On parents) and now guess what, you are her cat mom now.   You must explain to her why you are doing certain things. especially leaving, and getting into a water hazard in the morning, so that she understands.
