Question:

Kitten in heat. Questions.

My 6 month old cat is in heat for the first time. At least I think she is in heat. She is very small and the doctors wanted to wait until she is larger to get her fixed. What can I expect from her while she is in heat? What can I do to keep her from fighting with my other cat? Also, can she get fixed while she is in heat or do I have to wait?

Thanks

  1. Hmm that sounds odd...if she is over 3 pounds she can be fixed, go see another vet.

  2. It doesnt really matter if sheis in heat.

and yes wait until shes out of it.

  3. You can get her fixed while in heat, but most vets charge more, as there is more blood in the area, making the surgery more complicated.

  4. HI,

Since your vet suggested waiting I am sure your vet will not mind you making a call to ask this same exact question over the phone...  Calls are generally free.

I think you are a very responsible pet owner

  5. If the vet says wait, you should wait. Getting her fixed at too young an age is dangerous because she's not full grown and her natural defenses aren't as strong as they could be. While she's in heat though, you should keep her inside and make sure no boy cats are around.

While she's in heat, she may become extremely affectionate, and she may rub her hindquarters on anything she likes (toys, furniture, you, etc.)

She's also possibly going to cry. A lot. Loudly. As well as exposing her perineum (her genitals). She may also spray virtical surfaces with a strong scented liquid. If she lifts her tail and points her backside to the surface, she's about to spray.

She may go into heat afterward every 2 or 3 weeks for several months afterward until she's spayed or mates. Your vet can give you some horemones to control her going into heat if she's too young to mate or get spayed.

  6. You should wait to get her fixed until the doctors are comfortable with it. You should put her in a separate room while she is in heat. She isn't likely to fight with your other cat (is the other one male or female).

You can expect howling at all hours of the night, and to see her "presenting" herself. This is where she lifts her tale and sticks her butt in the air.

  7. You have to wait until after she is out of heat unless you want to pay more for the spay. They can fix her in heat but it costs more. All she will probably do is meow ALOT and stick her butt up in the air constantly, they actually become very lovable and affectionate, so she probably wont fight with the other cat. My experience with my 2 female cats were that their first heats really werent that bad. Just make sure she stays inside other wise she will most assureadly get prego!

Have fun with that, its tough to get through but it shouldnt last quite a week!

  8. I have 3 females all differnt ages and they werent bad at all when they were in heat. There was no blood, no nothing. They just meow this really crazy loud meow, drives ya nuts lol. And they stick their hiney up in the air alot or rub it around. True watch the door, she might look for a boyfriend. My cats never fought while they were in heat. maybe it wont be as bad as you think. good luck
