Kitten with diarrhea

I adopted an 8 week old kitten from a vet's office yesterday. She's been tested for all the common feline ailments, her stool was checked, and she is completely healthy. She was given her first set of vaccinations and was treated with flea medicine. The vet told me when I picked her up yesterday that she started having mild diarrhea on Wednesday (yesterday was Friday) and she's currently on .4 ml metronidazole twice per day. The vet said it's more than likely an intestinal parasite. Does anyone know how long diarrhea usually lasts in kittens? We haven't switched her food. Thanks!

  1. Did you happen to ask the place where you adopted your kitten if they dewarmed the kitten? If they did, then there is your culprit. Dewarmer will give cats diarrhea for about a week until it cleans out their system. It could also be the food they were giving her. If she isn't better in about a week then check back with them but I will tell you this, certain foods give our cats diarrhea. They get baby food as a treat (ASPCA recommended). This gives them the runs. If it doesn't gross you out to bad, just check her stools to makes sure they are not bloody, other wise it sounds like something she will snap out of in a few days. Best of luck.

  2. there is no approximate time that kittens will stop getting diarhea. if your vet told you that she most likely has an intestinal parasite, then the diarhea will stop when she either adjusts to the meds, or when the parasite is gone.
