Hey

I asked this yesterday but wasnt very clear.

I have 3 kittens, 2 @ 6 months old and 1 @ 3 months old. They have all just spent a few days in a cattery and have come back with diarrhoea.

The 6 month old kittens started to not eat their kitten food, so i put them on cat food and they loved it.

Some people responded and said it was the change in food that had casued them to have diarrhoea, but this cant be the case as ALL my kittens have diarrhoea and i havent changed the youngest kitten's food.

I have put them on biscuits only to see if that helps, but just wondered if anyone thinks it might be a bug or something, or anything i can do to help the situation.

They are all drinking alot of water, but they kind of did anyway because they are vey active and the hot weather made them drink a lot.

Any suggestions, thanks.

  1. well last person that asked i told him to give his kitty meat like tuna and chicken not only will they love it as a treat but it hardens them up as they r carnivorous n meant to eat meat naturally. try Wikipedia theres a page there that sais specifically they have a digestive system made 4 proteins and fats (meat!) my kitty begs me 4 hot dogs and other meat n he hasn't been runny sence we got him (3 weeks ago) but my kitty had same problum lol but the meat helped alot try tuna and chicken 1st its good cause its soft inuf 4 them 2 chew apart really easy

  2. ask what the cattery was feeding them,

if they fed them cows milk thats y,

ifit continues i would take them 2 the vet,

  3. Get them to a vet. If you can't afford a vet and you're in the UK, go to the PDSA - they'll treat for free if you're on a low income or benefits.

Kittens will dehydrate quickly if the diarrhoea persists, due to their small body mass. They could easily have caught something in the cattery - usually a short course of antibiotics sorts them out.

Whatever you do, don't leave it untreated.

  4. It sounds like they have worms buy them over the counter meds

  5. Go back to my previous answer, and do as I said, if those don't work in 1-2 days start meds.

The things they may have gotten from the cattery are:

    a. worms, that's why I told you to deworm them to cover that.

    b. bacterial parasites, which you can treat with Flagyl (metronidazole) (that is very helpful in diarrhea cases, but you must get the right dosage from your vet and administer it for 1 week). You can also give them Flagyl anyway, just make sure you find out the right dosage and I 'd wait 1-2 days with i/d and Canikur, if it is food it will pass.

    c. panleucopenia, that's a serious disease and I doubt all of them have it. That has a high fever, vomiting, not eating, and it needs hospitalisation. That's why I said if they look sick like that take them to the vet ASAP.

Don't worry awfully, kittens often get diarrhea. When I gave my kitten to a cattery she had so runny stools afterwards I thought she was peeing! She got well after 2 days of boiled chicken, Hill's i/d and Canikur. This Canikur really works, crush it into i/d food for 2 days, no more. It is no med, just a supplement that normalises intestine and makes the stool more dense.

Let us know how it went!

  6. contact the cattery, better still go back there in person and and for full written details of what they had to eat and drink while staying there, tell them they are all poorly with upset tummies. then take the list to the vet and they should be able to suggest some special food to buy for them until their tummies settle or give you some medicine for them.

  7. Hi you will find that most kittens do have lots of diarrhoea, and I find its the kitten food that actually causes it, we changed our kitten to dry food for a few days to harden him up and then put him onto normal cat food.

If this doesnt work they maybe getting your kittens wormed as they all have worms when born, you can get kitten syrup to use on the 3 month old and you can also use it on the 6 month olds but it is better to take them to the vets to get the right dosage and im sure your cats will have normal tummys once they have settled into a certain type of food there not allergic too.

I have 5 adult cats and 1 kitten and when we got the kitten he only liked certain types of kitten food so we gave the adult cats the rest of the kitten food that my kitten didnt want and it made all my adult cats have an upset tummy, some cat food is far to rich for them, especially whiskas cat food.

  8. It is a good sighn - they drink a lot. If cats are really sick - they usually don't drink.

My advice - bye some baby chicken food in glass jars (only chicken puree, without vegetables - try Gerber brand) and give them only this food for 2-3 days. Monitor them.

    Good luck.
