Question:

Kitty has diarrhea, any advice?

I just got my new kitten about 3 days ago. However I'm a little worried. Up till today he hasn't had diarrhea, some soft typical kitty stools. I came home and noticed that perhaps he had lost his stomach's contents. A little while ago he vomited and had diarrhea. The lady I got him from has had him on either soft food or dry with a little water. So I started him on some soft food till last night when I gave him some hard food, today he has had diarrhea and vomiting. He is still a VERY active kitty and he's currently poking at my back.

I haven't taken him to the vet yet since the vet here gives shots at 9weeks of age, he is about 5/6 now. So I was going to wait. However I'm a bit nervous about this situation. Though if it was worms wouldn't he have had diarrhea when I first had him? Or could this be the sudden change in food diet for last night?

  1. First of all the lady who gave you the kitten gave you the kitten entirely way too young. Kittens need to stay with their mother until 8 weeks at the earliest. You NEED to take him to the vet as soon as possible. It is very crucial if a kitten is experiencing diarrhea because the kitten could become very dehydrated and die. Something isn't right, most likely a parasite or even the food. Please take him to the vet as soon as possible!

  2. For one thing if he is 5-6 weeks old now, he is way too young to be separated from his mother.  He should be still nursing a little bit and just starting to be weaned off of her.  That, I think, is the biggest problem.  And yes, the change in his food is also a contributing factor.  It doesn't matter that his shots aren't due until he's 9 weeks.  If he was given to you and taken from his mother so early by this (I am supposing) breeder then you need to take him in to the vet to get his overall health check up.  It will be easier and better for him if you do so.

  3. I'm 100% sure its the change in food, and probably still the change in location. A little bit of nerves ads up to a lot when you are so little :) just make sure hes still eating and drinking normally, that's REALLY important to monitor that closely,  and if the diarrhea doesn't go away in 2-3 days then take him to the vet. bu if hes still playful that's a good sign. :)  but cats, especially kitties, are known for have weak stomachs. its not hard at all to upset their stomach.

  4. take him to the vet ASAP with and animal that young you have to take this seriously vomitting and diarrhea can make him very hypoglycemic.

also without a veterinarian examining him its impossible to know whats causing this G.I upset. it could be a number of things (parasites, infection, viruses, change in diet, allergies)

its best to be safe then sorry
