Kitty now is constipated. ><?

So I ended up taking my kitten to the vet because of vomiting/diarrhea. It came up to be quite the bill but that's alright, apparently he doesn't seem to have worms but it was possibly a parasite or the change in diet.

In any case, the diarrhea is gone but he's now constipated. The list below is the meds that he was given.

Albon Oral Suspension (For bacteria)

Nutrical Tube (Kitty Fred-Flinstone vitamins)

FVRCPC (Feline distemper)

Drontal feline (Wormer)

Metronidazole (Antibiotic for bacteria)

Endosorb suspension (Stool hardener)

Fortiflora feline (Stomach cultures/nutrition supplement)

I was curious, could it possibly be the Endosorb that's giving him "sticky-poo" problems? Granted he also got his feline distemper shot as well.

He tried to go a few times, and the last time he ended up getting just a little out and I had to end up washing him since he's a medium fur kitten.

Despite the constipation he has eaten and he's remaining playful and active (at least as much as the distemper shot will allow) right now he's sleeping in the covers beside me.

In any case kitten is 5/6 weeks old (don't ream me about the age, I'm already aware)

Thanks for the insight.

  1. Your kitten has several medications that will work on his gut and intestines which may be adding to his bowel problems.

I would keep giving the medications as directed until you can speak with his vet tomorrow.

Here is the information sheet on the Endosorb. It suggests having plenty of fresh water available. Water is vital always to keep the stool soft enough to pass.

I would keep him on moist food for now and add a little water to it to make it soupy. Warm it just slightly in the microwave and stir to make sure there are no hot spots. Warm food is more appetizing than cold and may encourage him to eat more. Another option is the meat flavored baby foods..just be sure they do not contain onions. I keep Gerber and BeechNut on hand for mine. Add a little water to this too. Baby food does not have the proper nutrients for a regular diet, but are okay to help get one eating again.

Another problem, since he has had diarrhea, he may not have enough solids in his system to form solid f***s.

The good sign is the playfulness and activity.

Purrs to you and your sweet little kitten.

[Edit] I saw your additional information and his picture..what a cutie! I love black and white kitties..I have two and an all black one.

The food suggestion was to help with water intake, too. Kitties are not big water drinkers to just drink from a bowl. I am glad he is eating. I hope he gets back to normal soon. It is obvious you care about him very much.

  2. Yep I'd say it's the stool hardener that's doing it. Keep an eye on him and if he still can't p**p, call the vet and ask for advice, he should be able to tell you over the phone.

  3. your best bet is to call up your vet and ask if any of these meds cause constipation if so let the doc know the situation. Otherwise if the kitty is eating normally then all you have to is wait cuz all that food will come out sooner or later. Not to worry he will be alright.
