Kiwi Bay aiming for third win in John Smith´s Redcar Straight-Mile Championship Final (Handicap)
Kiwi Bay has a phenomenal track record at Redcar, as he won five of 11 here, including the John Smith´s Redcar Straight-Mile Championship Final (Handicap) past two years. The Michael Dods-trained is in fine fettle these days, and can easily complete his
hat-trick in this class 2 meeting, taking place on Saturday, October 06, 2012.
The 7-year-old has already won a crucial meeting here earlier this season. After suffering an embarrassing defeat at Doncaster in early June, the Kiwi Racing-owned came to his favourite venue, and did not face any trouble in getting back to the winning ways.
The Anderson Barrowcliff Handicap (Qualifier for the John Smith's Straight-Mile Championship) saw him taking a very close win over Next Edition. In the hands of Tom Eaves, the 7-4 favourite took keen hold early on, but lost his advantage in the middle stages.
Not losing his momentum, he edged left in the dying moments, and led near the wire. An excellent finish guided him to a narrow victory.
The son of Mujahid looked a bit rusty on his latest outing here last month. In the John Smith's Redcar Straight-Mile Championship (Qualifier) (Handicap), Kiwi Bay held up towards the rear.
Although he made some progress afterwards, it was very difficult for him to go near the leaders. As a result, he ended up eighth behind the 9-2 favourite, Jo'Burg.
Jo’Burg, who beat Kiwi Bay last time, loves it here, but carrying a lot of weight today. Moreover, a soft surface is unlikely to suit him.
Michael Dods has another interesting contender in Hakuna Matata, who ran reasonably well on his previous two starts here. Dolphin Rock got off the mark for new yard last month. Brian Ellison’s charge has a decent chance again.
As per the schedule, the meeting will be kicked off at 14:40 GMT. The winner of this 1-mile event will be given a handy prize worth £12,450.
Kiwi Bay´s exceptional track record at Redcar is enough to suggest that he has a significant role to play. The dangerous fellow handles this surface very well, and will be a hard nut to crack. Good luck to all the horses.
