Kiwi Chauncy Welliver grabs his fourth gold, annihilates Ghanian Moyoyo Mensah – Boxing news
Chauncy Welliver, World Boxing Organisation’s number 10 and World Boxing Council’s number six heavyweight champion showed the world why he is the rightful owner and why he wears four championship titles at the same time around his waist by knocking out Moyoyo
Mensah in a 12-round bout.
Welliver and Mensah were bound to take on each other on Saturday January 28, 2012 at The Corporate Box situated in Auckland, New Zealand. The bout can be denoted as a clash between two different nations who threw their best heavyweights in the squared ring.
Welliver hails from Washington, America but currently represents the Kiwis.
Mensah, on the other hand was far away from his home country, Ghana hence lacking the home advantage. Moyoyo is Ghana’s number one heavyweight whereas Welliver is considered as the second best heavyweight in New Zealand.
The bout even before it started was dubbed as a one-sided, handicap brawl since Chauncy, infamous as the Hillyard Hammer, overshadowed Moyoyo emphatically by his vibrant experience.
The 28-year-old Hammer has a huge experience of 61 bouts. He has lost just 5 brawls and collected 5 draw decisions. His 51 wins include 19 wins by knockout. In addition Welliver is the proud owner and holder of New Zealand National Boxing Federation (NZNBF)
heavyweight title, interim WBO Asia Pacific heavyweight title, and WBC Asian Boxing Council heavyweight title.
Mensah, on the contrary was not only in his 31st brawl but also lacked seriously in experience. His 30 bouts included nine losses and one draw. Above all he was also the proud owner of vacant WBO Africa cruiserweight title. The Ghanian though has captured
various titles in his region; taking on a far better fighter especially of extreme competitive nature is totally a different aspect.
The 12-round encounter kicked off and Chauncy started to take full advantage of his hometown while lashing his fierce punches immensely targeting Moyoyo’s face. The Ghanian proud did strive hard to somehow overcome the huge Hammer but Welliver did not give
the requisite leverage.
After and intense beat down and impressive targeted punching the Kiwi knocked out his Ghanian opponent in the tenth round and made him lay flat on the squared ring. With this win Welliver has captured another gold round his waist and is now extremely rich
as far as the titles are concerned. Chauncy is now not only the proud owner of vacant WBO Oriental heavyweight title but is also on the way to seal his world title chance.
Chauncy stats now show 52 wins, 5 losses and 5 draws in a total 62 bouts. Moyoyo after collecting a defeat stands at 21 wins, nine losses and one draw.
