Kiwi hockey star, Richard Petherick optimistic for MHL
A prominent player of the New Zealand Men’s national hockey team, Richard Petherick is quite optimistic to deliver optimum performance in the next phase of the Malaysian Hockey League.
Richard is currently contesting in the MHL with Team UniKL-TRC and has marked a hat-trick of goals in the tournament. The black sticks talented defender successfully converted all three short corners and helped his team win the game against Utim 3-2.
The third goal during the last moments of the match came from a direct flicking hit to the goalpost, which changed the face of the scorecard and sent the UniKL grabbing a spot for the next phase of MHL.
Richard, while talking to the media, said that he was quite confident at that moment and opted for a direct attempt. He also expressed hopes for better results in the future games, adding that playing in the MHL would really help him to improve his all-round
performance.
The Kiwi star started his international career back in 2005 against Netherlands, and has attained 69 caps for the Blacks Sticks so far. He has taken part in many international events including the Azlan Shah Cup, the World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and
the Oceania Cup. Richard is looking forward to an interesting competition against Yayasan Negri Sembilan on December 31st, 2010, the title holders of the league.
While admiring the game of former Malaysian captain, S. Kuhan, the Black Stick star said, “I like his playing style and he is devastating with his penalty corners. Hopefully I will get the better of him when our teams meet."
His team has associated similar hopes, as UniKL TRC expect a mature game from him in the next round of the tournament. Richard along with other teammates are working to sustain their winning spirit and form against YNS side. However, UniKL are quite aware
of the challenge that lies before them.  The opponents YNS are a tough team, who have eleven foreign players including prominent names such as Muhammad Imran, Muhammad Waqas and veteran Shakeel Abbasi of Pakistan along with Deepak Thakur and Prabhjot Singh
of India.
On the other hand, Philipp Stahr and Kevin Lim of Germany star in the UniKL squad.
