Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on his best-ever performance against Sweden
Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar said his performance against Sweden on Tuesday evening, October 12, was his best ever for the Netherlands.
The in-form striker scored two goals at the Amsterdam Arena and assisted Ibrahim Afellay for the Dutch team's last goal in the 4–1 victory.
"I think this was the best game I've ever played for Holland," the striker said after the game. "There was a lot of space behind their defence. Our combination play was good and I could pick up balls left and right."
Huntelaar has nine international goals in eight competitive appearances this year, and has made a fine start to the season with his new club Schalke 04.
The 27-year-old has scored four goals in five league appearances for Felix Magath's team after failing to impress for AC Milan and Real Madrid in recent years.
The Netherlands in form
The Dutchman was also quick to praise the Netherlands' team performance against Sweden.
Bert van Marwijk's men cleverly waited for opportunities to break, and when given them, opened up the Swedish defence expertly with the help of midfielders Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder.
"This was a very good match from our side," the Schalke 04 striker said after the game, adding that his team could have won even more convincingly. "We put on a great show of football. We were perfect and could have scored five or six goals."
The Netherlands are now top of Group E with a maximum of nine points from three games, but Huntelaar said that humility will remain key for the World Cup silver medallists.
"We cannot crow about the fact we are so good though. Otherwise everyone will be waiting for us to slip. However, if we can keep it up, everything will work out well for us."
