Klaasen/ Lorenzi outplay Falla/ Struvay in the quarterfinal of Seguros Bolivar Open
Fourth seeded duo of Raven Klaasen of South Africa and Paolo Lorenzi of Italy defeated the Columbian pair of Alejandro Falla and Eduardo Struvey in the quarter-final of the Seguros Bolivar Open at San Jose, Costa Rica on Thursday
evening. The fourth seeded pair took barely an hour to blow away their opponents in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to register their second win of the current year.
Klaasen and Lorenz combined their efforts with great coordination to outplay their Columbian competitors and advance to the semi-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event at San Jose. They dominated
the contest throughout and awarded minimum opportunities to their rivals to have their impact on the game.
The Columbian pair appeared in all sorts of confusions right from the beginning of the match and slopped plenty of unforced errors under pressure. Falla and Struvay failed to develop the effective coordination required in a doubles
game and succumbed to their strong opponents. They received five opportunities to clinch break points but the Columbians availed just one chance out of them.
The winning pair was very proficient on collecting crucial points, bagging 24 out of 30 first serve points in the game. Klaasen and Lorenz crafted 11 break chances but converted four out of them, which proved sufficient for their
victory. They were greatly assisted by the Columbian opponent, who committed a number of unforced errors in the game, including seven double faults.
Klaasen and Lorenzi broke in the very first game of the opening set to take the upper hand in the game. They exploited the exposed cracks between their opponents with great mastery, delivering number of winners through them. A
routine game took the game forward with the Columbians trailing at 3-4. Klaasen and Lorenz hit a critical serve break in the eighth game and then easily served out of the first set at 6-3 to lead the match with one set to none.
Things got exacerbated for Falla and Struvay in the next set as they both coughed a total of four double faults. The Columbians were poor on winning points and kept crumbling under the pressure of defeat. Klaasen and Lorenz collected
11 out of 13 first serve points in the second set and broke the opponents’ serve on two different occasions. A total of 47 points were played in the set, with Klaasen and Lorenz winning 28 and their opponents merely 19. The contest was eventually concluded
by Klaasen and Lorenz at 6-3 to move on to the quarter-final of the Seguros Bolivar Open.
Klaasen and Lorenz will square off against the second seeded Mexican duo of Luis Diaz-Barriga and Santiago Gonzalez in the quarter-final of the tournament.
