Klara Spilkova off to fiery start in Dubai as she shoots 67 in first round
Czech Klara Spilkova amazed spectators in the first round of Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2012, as she shot a massive 67 to tighten her grip on the season-ending battle.
Spilkova was not expected to display such a refined form in the first round of the four-day tournament, as the field is packed with almost all the top-ranked LET (Ladies European Tour) contenders.
Despite being underrated, the Czech star did much better than most of the big names in the field. She opened the round with two back-to-back birdies on the first two holes.
Spilkova then parred the remaining holes on the front nine. On the back nine, the young gun displayed an even better performance as she reeled off three straight birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th hole. She parred the remaining holes, brining her overall score to a 67.
Spilkova has not been able to win any event in the 2012 season, but she has shown in some of the tournaments that she has what it takes to trouble rivals on the course.
The Allianz Ladies Slovak Open saw her finish tied for the 20th position on the leaderboard as she carded an overall score of 218.
She also participated in her home event—Raiffeisenbank Prague Golf Masters 2012, but could not do what she was being expected. She missed the cut after she posted a 75 and 72 in the first and second round respectively.
However, the LET star displayed a far better performance in the 2011 edition of the Prague Masters, as she finished 9th after posting an overall score of 209 on the leaderboard.
She had said during the 2012 edition of her home event that she was feeling fully fit as she received some meaningful assistance from her caddie.
“I think it’s better and better and with my new caddie Michal I feel more confident in my game and a little bit more consistent. I think everything in my game, my scores are more consistent,” said Spilkova who recorded two top-10 finishes in the 2011 season, which also includes the 9th-place finish at the Prague Masters.
“I really enjoy the life on the Ladies European Tour (and China, Australia, but it’s just for a few weeks). I would like to play in The Solheim Cup: It’s my dream,” the rising star had expressed her ambitious.
