Klara Zakopalova annihilates Laura Pous-Tio in round one – BNP Paribas Open 2012
World number 51, Klara Zakopalova, showed faultless performance to devastate the Spanish starlet, Laura Pous-Tio, with double breadsticks at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Wednesday. She nudged up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Spaniard to book a spot in the
second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place on the hard courts.
Clashing each other for the third time, Zakopalova took 41-minutes to not only destroy the world number 94 but also took lead in their head-to-head series by 2-1. She was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed in five out of nine break chances to
earn this straight set victory.
The 30-year-old high spiritedly entered the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and blasted groundstrokes to wind up the opening five games successively. After Pous-Tio came on the score board for the first time in the sixth game, the Czech held her serve once more
and bagged the opener with a 6-1 win.
Zakopalova kept momentum rolling into the proceeding set and went on a four-game rampage. After the Spaniard held her serve in the fifth game, the Czech maintained her intensity and capitalised on another break opportunity to pull out the second breadstick.
Summing up the beaming Czech’s performance at this hard court tournament, Zakopalova committed more double faults but clobbered a better first serve share of 57 percent as opposed to Pous-Tio’s 49 percent. She also spectacularly availed 19 out of 21 points
on it.
Up next for the Czech veteran is the former world number five, Daniela Hantuchova from Slovakia. The 19th seeded Slovak received a bye into the second round after being a seeded player at this tournament.
Indian star, Sania Mirza, will accompany the Czech in the second round. She took two hours to bounce over the German contender, Kristina Barrois, in their second face-to-face. Mirza lost her serve once to suffer a 4-6 shock in the opening set.
The world number 130 then sought 14 break chances and cashed in five of them to manipulate a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory. Mirza spilled more errors and joggled up a lower first serve share. However, she clicked 35 out of 51 points on it to earn the limelight.
