Klara Zakopalova defeats Irina-Camelia Begu in 2nd round – Hansol Korea Open 2011
Another upset of the day was when Czech Klara Zakopalova defeated number seven seed and wildcard entrant Irina-Camelia Begu in the second round match of the Hansol Korea Open 2011. On 21st of September 2011 the players battled
it out for fifty three minutes of the match and at the end unseeded Czech stood victorious in straight sets of a double bread stick victory (6-1, 6-1).
The two players had contested against each other once prior to this event in 2011. This year both had battled it out on clay courts of Marbella, Spain where Begu had triumphed over her Czech opponent in straight sets. However,
Zakopalova finally got the chance at this event to avenge her loss and tied the head-to-head score.
Meeting for the second time and opting to serve first for the initial set was Zakopavova, who got off to an amazing start as she not only held her serve in the first game but also went on to breaking her opponent in the second
and took a mini lead of 2-0.
Although, Begu was broken early in the game, she wasn’t ready to throw in the towel and broke back in the following game. However, it was a short lived victory as the Czech brass broke her in the fourth game and maintained a ‘two
breaks’ up distance.
In t he last three games Zakopalova not only held her own but also broke her adversary in the eighth game for the last time to reel off a quick bread stick victory.
Initiating the second set was Begu, who was capable of holding her service game this time and successfully placed herself on the scoreboard. Zakopalova was also not far behind as she too held her respective game and tied the score
at 1-1.
However, as Zakopalova kept her dominance, she then went on to breaking her opponent in the third game for the first time and took a mini lead of 2-1. The unseeded Czech then went on to holding her service game in the fourth game
and was now and had achieved a considerable gap between her score and her adversary’s.
During the last three games, Zakopalova had taken a notch higher and aimed for a near flawless victory. As she broke Begu once in the fifth game and the again in the seventh game, she was able to square off the set with another
breadstick victory.
The number seven seeded Begu was put to shame by her unseeded Czech rival in straight sets. Zakopalova was able to conquer the second round to secure a berth in the quarterfinal of the event where she will be facing American Vania
King.
