Klara Zakopalova ousts Mariana Duque-Marino but withdraws from the quarter-final – Swedish Open 2012
Czech tennis star, Klara Zakopalova, eased past the 117th ranked Colombian professional, Mariana Duque-Marino, in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 to qualify for the quarter-final clash of the tournament. It was a contest that
lasted just 52 minutes at the clay courts of Bastad, Sweden.
On the eve of Friday, the 30-year-old Czech was forced to contest her second match as well that was against the Swede professional, Johanna Larsson. Unfortunately for the 33rd ranked Czech, she fall victim to the viral
illness that forced Olga Govortsova out of the contest as well. She lasted just two games in the quarter-final clash before withdrawing from that event.
Coming to the first encounter of the sixth seed Czech, she was absolutely devastating and no one thought that she will be knocked out by the 104th ranked Swede in the battle for the place in last four. She won three
breakpoints on the trot in the opening set and held her serve to register a resounding bagel in the opening set.
Zakopalova won 30 points in the opening set that included three breakpoints that were successfully converted from the six allotted opportunities. Both players smashed one ace apiece but the Colombian qualifier was absolutely slaughtered
in the other departments of the game.
Nothing changed in the second set as well except one serve hold for the Colombian in the dying stages of the match. The Czech won five games on the trot and looked set to register another embarrassing bagel but Marino restored
some respect by holding serve to 40:30 in the sixth game.
The 33rd ranked Czech converted two out of three breakpoints and won 30 points in the second set as well. Marino won three more points in the second set compared to her first set show and her total points tally moved
on 31.
The only department which placed a better result for the Colombian was the number of aces. Marino punched in two aces compared to one of her rival. It was a terrible performance from the Colombian who was expected to put up a decent
show against the sixth seed Czech.
In the second encounter of Zakopalova, she was losing 0-2 when she requested to call off the match because she was struggling to from the illness. It was an unfortunate ending to a promising start for the Czech star who has entered
into her last few years of the professional tennis.
