Klara Zakopalova’s best moment of 2012 – Tennis Special
Czech star Klara Zakopalova’s best moment of this circuit was reaching fourth round at a Grand Slam event. She also cracked the Top 30 in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings with her impressive run of form this year.
The Czech veteran made her second fourth round appearance at a Grand Slam event this year. She bowed out to eventual champion Maria Sharapova at the Roland Garros but made highlight of her career there.
The Czech star was quoted in an interview about her best moment of 2012 season:
"My highlight was at Roland Garros, where I reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the second time in my life, and I played a really good match against Maria Sharapova. I was really happy after that tournament - I had a lot of energy to work hard and
focus on things I still want to improve."
Zakopalova reflected about cracking the Top 30 this season, "For sure it's a great feeling, but I haven't reached my goal, so I have more hard work in front of me!"
The Czech entered the French Open standing at number 42 at the WTA rankings. She was coming off from the final showdown at the Prague ITF where she lost to her compatriot Lucie Safarova in straight sets. Zakopalova high-spiritedly entered the Stade Roland
Garros. She crippled the Ukrainian starlet, Lesia Tsurenko, with a breadstick without dropping her serve.
Currently ranked 28th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Zakopalova carried her rhythm in the following round where 16th seeded Maria Kirilenko was waiting. She made quick in-roads and pocketed the opener with ease. Despite levelling the
set scores, the Czech remained focused and ultimately carved out the victory with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 score line.
Zakopalova kept her momentum rolling in the third round. She stunned 22nd seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets to set up a date with the world number two, Sharapova. The Czech lost her serve four times but cashed seven out of 10 break
chances to clobber a 6-3, 7-5 success.
In the fourth round, Zakopalova made a drastic start and gifted away the opener. However, she got back in contention after dominating in the second set’s tie-breaker. The Czech failed to carry her momentum but gained confidence boost with her performance.
She also jumped seven spot in the WTA Premier Rankings.
The 30-year-old is currently training hard for the upcoming season.
