Klas Eriksson fires course-record 62 to take halfway lead at the ECCO Tour Championship
Klas Eriksson cruised into the lead midway through the second round of the ECCO Tour Championship hosted by Thomas Björn & Mercedes-Benz in Horsens, Denmark.
The Swede is on 12-under, following his opening-round 70, with a blistering 10-under 66 at the Stensballegaard Golf Klub.
It was the lowest round score ever that he posted in his 21-year career so far. His previous best, 63, came at the Rolex Trophy, the DHL Wroclaw Open and the MAN NÖ Open in 2008.
He was among the early starters in the morning and had to fight against strong winds and cold weather. Yet, he managed to remain bogey-free throughout the round and sank 10 birdies to set a new course record.
He got off to a slow start and parred each of the first four holes that he played. The remaining 14 holes witnessed him create birdie chances every time he teed off.
“If you’re going to shoot a really low one you have to putt well, and it goes without saying that I had a very good day on the greens,” he said.
“But you also have to give yourself the chances, and I played so solid all day. I actually played pretty well yesterday, but just made some stupid mistakes. Today I cut them out, and also holed a lot of putts”.
He was so accurate with his strokes that he hit all the greens in regulation. According to him, he could have done even better if he had not missed the eagle chance at the par-five 15th hole – he three-putted for a par.
In addition to that, his ball lipped out of the hole when he tried for a birdie putt on the final hole of the day. He also stated that he was never as good with his putting as he was during the second round in Denmark.
“I got off to a really slow start this year, but a round like this should get my season going,” he said. “We’ve got some really important tournaments coming up now, so it would be a great time to peak”.
He currently holds a commanding four-stroke lead over Jordi Garcia Pinto, who also had a great day with a seven-under par 65.
