Werder Bremen general manager, Klaus Allofs, revealed that Per Mertesacker and Tim Wiese can’t be offered contract extensions due to the club’s current financial situation. He mentioned that both are top quality players but the club are struggling at the
moment and can’t bear the players’ salary. He hoped that the matter would soon be resolved between both the parties and was looking forward to having a successful 2011/12 campaign.
He expressed disappointment at the entire situation and at the same time wanted to keep the duo at Weserstadion in the future. He enthused that the officials would try to overcome this problem at the earliest, ideally before the conclusion of the next season.
Allofs told that both players invited interest from a number of clubs during the summer and if the situation doesn’t ease up, the club would have to sell the duo next year.
He was unsure if the situation would grow any better in the coming days but urged both the players not to lose heart and continue training with same enthusiasm and passion.
In an interview to a local sports channel, Allofs told, "We have told Tim that, because of financial reasons, we can't extend his contract at the moment. We cannot make Tim or Per any offers currently. This does not mean that negotiations at a later date
cannot be set up, though. The issue is not off the table, even during the season you can still get into a conversation."
Bremen manager, Thomas Schaaf, told that it would be unfortunate parting ways with the duo and urged the officials to seize control of the situation or the club might have to lose a few top players to balance their books.

Weise, on the other hand, tied knots with Bremen in 2005 and has made 164 Bundesliga appearances so far. The 29-year-old has three international caps to his name so far.
