Klein/Propoggia upset Lee/Peng in the doubles opening draw – Dunlop World Challenge 2012 CH
Another upset was witnessed in the doubles draw of Dunlop World Challenge on Monday, when the third seeded Taiwanese duo of Hsin-Han Lee and Hsien-Yin Peng crashed out of the tournament in the very first round. They were taken
down by a stunning performance from the Australian tandem of Brydan Klein and Dane Propoggia, who qualified for the quarter-final round of the ATP Challenger Tour event in Toyota, Japan.
The Aussie underdogs took merely 67 minutes to register a final score line of 6-1, 6-7(3), 10-3.
It was an eye-startling performance from the unseeded Australians, who came out firing at their superior-ranked opponent right from the beginning. They didn’t allow any time to Lee and Peng to get settled in the contest and nailed
a serve break right away. Klein and Propoggia stung two successive breaks of serve in the fourth and sixth games respectively to attain an unassailable lead of 5-1 in no time. They had no trouble in serving out of the first set and registered a breadstick,
6-1.
Third seed Lee and Peng had a more cautious start in the following set and didn’t allow the Aussies to take the better of them. They faced two break points from the underdog opponents but successfully defended them to keep moving
on even terms. With both duos failing to break serve, the second set entered a tie-break round at 6-6. Lee and Peng managed to come on top this time round and stole the tie-breaker at 7-6(3) to make their way back in the contest.
The hot favourite Taiwanese contenders couldn’t sustain their winning impetus in the decider and were seen all over the place. Klein and Propoggia were off to a flyer in the super tie-break round and posted a 8-2 lead in a flash.
They spared merely three points for the Taiwanese rivals in the decisive set and closed out the match at 10-3 to reach the quarter-final stages of the tournament convincingly.
Klein and Propoggia will face the other unseeded Italian pair of Andrea Arnaboldi and Matteo Viola for a place in the semi-finals of Dunlop World Challenge on Wednesday afternoon.
