Borussia Dortmund team trainer Jurgen Klopp has asked his club not to play for a draw when they play against Ajax in the UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday. He insisted that the BVB are not certain of progression in Europe’s
elite club competition.
The defending champions sit at the top of their group stage and are favourites to reach the next round, but the former Mainz 05 player and manager stressed that progression is not warranted until now. A point would see them qualify
for the knockout stage but Klopp wants the player to play for a win against Ajax.
The manager claimed that Ajax have a quality side and they will pose problems for them by exhibiting quick attacking football. However, he maintained that good attack does not necessarily win you matches. He said that the Dutch
outfit have the potential to win at home because of their firepower in attack.
"We don't play for just a point. Ajax are an inventive team that always try to find a solution by playing good football. But if you play football, it does not mean that you win. Ajax have the chance to win because they attack,
but so do we,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The tactician conceded that both sides have improved since their previous encounter. He commented that the competition is fiercer and the clash can be seen as a crucial one. A lot is dependent on the match and any team can claim
victory.
"Both teams have grown since the first match. The competition is progressing and you can see tomorrow's game as a semi-final in this group. It is a very important game for both teams. We have no certainty at this moment,” he finally concluded.
Klopp admitted that his side has done well in this year’s Champions League after the disappointments of last term’s edition, but said that they could have done better.
