Knee injury: Cincinnati Bengals yet to ascertain guard Travelle Wharton’s recovery – NFL News
The Cincinnati Bengals have confirmed left guard Travelle Wharton has suffered a serious knee injury in the preseason opener against the New York Jets on Friday.
He is among the game’s most seriously injured players, who include middle linebacker Rey Maualuga and defensive end Carlos Dunlap. Travelle was taken on the sidelines on a cart, reflecting on the serious nature of the scare.
Although Bengals have not offered any information if he is out of the season, this seems to be an apparent case, especially if the player requires a surgery to fix the problem.
It will certainly be devastating for the player and also for the team if he has suffered an injury as serious as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), if nothing more severe.
In case of surgery he will need substantial amount of time on the recovery and rehab, which in absence of exact details of the injury is difficult to ascertain at the moment.
Nevertheless, it was not a good start to the player’s season run and any longer ousting can certainly push his career prospects way back.
Although it was a good start for Bengals as they came out victorious, the number of injuries occurred during the game is no way a good development for them.
It is only preseason phase and the team has a long way to go. Any further injuries will prove disastrous to their hopes of improving from the previous year’s level when they finished in first round of the playoffs.
Coach Marvin Lewis has boasted about the preparedness of his team to face the new season’s challenges successfully, but looked to be rather disappointed after three key players hitting the sidelines with respective injury issues.
He still remains hopeful of Bengals’ potential to perform better this season. Overall, the coach was satisfied with the team’s form in the opener but insisted it was just the beginning and there was a lot of room for all players to further improve.
