Knee injury forces Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard out of starter competition – NFL News
A lingering knee injury has forced Miami Dolphins’ veteran quarterback David Garrard out of the competition for starting job as the player, who now requires an arthroscopic surgery, is expected to be out of the side for four weeks at least.
David’s agent Al Irby while confirming the injury on Friday said the problem had been bothering his client for the last few days and as a result of another evaluation he has decided now to get the procedure done before delaying it further.
He said:
"He had been feeling some soreness, and he got it looked at. He could have played on it, but they'd rather do the surgery now to make him more comfortable, rather than fool around with it."
The recovery will require the player two to four weeks. He is expected to be back to the squad in regular season.
This has pushed his chances of winning the starter’s role for the season opener way back. The competition for the position is now narrowed down between the incumbent Matt Moore and rookie QB Ryan Tannehill.
It is an unfortunate development for the QB, as he was reported to have topped the depth chart of the team last week, and was projected to win the leading role straightaway.
He still has chance to win the role for the second or any game beyond the opener if is able to recover and report his fitness in a couple of weeks.
The player himself is optimistic about the possibility given arthroscopic is a minor procedure and can allow him a speedy recovery, which, if happens, will be great news for the veteran.
David started for the Jacksonville Jaguars for many seasons in the past and was expected to win the position here at Dolphins. The injury scare has diminished the possibility for him for a while, and has paved the way for Matt Moore to claim the position.
The chances of him playing the leader's role are greater because rookie Ryan does not have much experience on the QB position. He is less likely to be given the ball first to start the season for Dolphins.
