Knee injury - urgent please help

Ok I have a fitness test for the Royal Marines in one week. I have to run 1.5 miles in less than 9:30 minutes. I can do this fine normally but for the past week i've had a bad knee injury which has prevented me from running. So I took a week off, got some rest, bought a decent pair of running shoes, but it's still there.

I run for about 2 minutes and then each time I come down on my right leg there it gets really painful around my knee. I put this down to running in terrible shoes and not warming up properly. I know i'm an idiot but I need this to heal quickly.

In the meantime i'll go swimming a few days but how can I speed up recovery for my knee?

  1. Well I would say that you buy a good knee brace, like a really good high quality one so that it will relieve pressure on your knee.

  2. Well, the ideal method is rest.  However, it sounds like you have some inflammation in there and it is cause discomfort and don't have much time for that.  So you should be icing 20 minute on 20 minutes off,  try keeping it elevated, and take Advil.

  3. Hi,

The thought and anxiety attached to having a  "test" coming up in a week is most likely the main cause of your knee injury. The best thing to do would be to detach from the pain in your knee by simply breathing. Breathe in deep and slow in through your nose and breathe out deep and slow through your mouth, 5 secs in and 8 secs out.  Do this regularly with your eyes closed to detach. Then still with your eyes closed breathe in through your mouth, again deep and slow and imagine the air going to your troubled knee, this will release the tension and relax the knee eliminating any pain. Practise and your knee pain will ease off and your mind will become more relaxed and you will be able to run next week and pass your test.

    Good Luck

  4. go and see a physiotherapist. they might be able to tell you what is wrong, and sort it out. for the moment, just try and stay off it. either heat it or cool it. im not sure which!! which is why i would recommend going to see a professional!!!

  5. I think you're going to have to see a dr or a physio if you really want to deal with this injury...

A knee support may alleviate some of the pain but I'm guessing that you won't be able to wear this in your upcoming fitness test...

Deep Heat is a good product and something I've used to target injuries in the past, as are cortisone injections. You might be able to pick up a spray or a gel without a prescription but I think there are some tablet versions too... Speak to a chemist and see if they have any quick-fix remedies or ideas (though they may tell you to get to a dr!!)

I don't suppose you have an oxygen tent at home?? :)
