Knee surgery of Wallabies prop Benn Robinson rules him out of 2011 Rugby World Cup
Wallabies international front row forward Benn Robinson has announced his unavailability from the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC).
Robinson confirmed the surgery to his knee in a comment made on his Twitter account on Monday, August 15.
Robinson sustained injury to his knee during the last month, but was hoping to recover from the injury without undergoing the operation. He tore his knee’s anterior cruciate ligament during the Wallabies training sessions at the end of the 2011 Super Rugby
season. It was hoped that it might recover without the surgery.
Providing the details, Robinson said, “Heading in for surgery tomorrow (Tuesday, August 16). He further added, “Pushed really hard to make it, but knee just isn't right.”
The surgery rehabilitation will require 8-12 weeks. Considering the length of the rehabilitation period, Robinson earlier opted to use the medicine and intensive care to recover from the injury.
Although the injury was of serious intent however, for the sake of representing the Wallabies in the 2011 RWC, Robinson took the alternate course.
Robinson has expressed his disappointment from not making the Wallabies squad for the 2011 RWC. He termed it as “very disheartening.”
The 27-year-old Robinson started his professional rugby career with Australian Rugby Union provincial side, Sydney Rams Eastwood in 2004. He so far has made 85 appearances for Eastwood and has scored 40 points
Sydney born Robinson made his Super Rugby debut for the New South Wales Waratahs, during the 2006 season, against the Reds. He so far has played 78 Super Rugby games and has scored 30 points.
Wallabies’ international prop Robinson made his international debut against the Springboks in 2006. He so far has played 42 international matches for Wallabies and has scored two tries so far.
Wallabies head coach Robbie Deans is expected to announce his final 30-man squad for their 2011 RWC campaign on Thursday, August 18. He termed his disappointment on the un-availability of the Robinson for their RWC campaign.
Robinson is ranked among the top four prop’s in the country. His explosive ball handling, ball carrying and dynamic attacking game alongside his performance at the scrums, makes him distant from the others.
The duo of Brumbies prop Salesi Maafu and Reds prop Ben Daley are eyeing a spot left vacant due the omission of Robinson from the 2011 RWC campaign.
Additionally, following their impressive performance in the Wallabies last weekend’s 14 – 9 victory, over the Springboks, the duo of Sekope Kepu and Ben Alexander are better placed to earn a spot in the Wallabies final 30-man squad for the 2011 RWC.
