Knife for fishing?

Question

i am only just a teenager and i am going fishing with my friend (no over 18's). i need to take a pocket knife for ovious reasons. would it be perfectly leagel to do this?

oh and the blade is exactly 2.5 inches and it is a swiss army pocket knife.

That should be fine. In most states the legal blade length is 4 inches. You would probably be better off with a fish knife though. I recommend a Case brand. It has a hook sharpener built right into the handle. Check out Smokey Mountain Knife Works. They are located in Sevierville Tennessee. I'd say thats fine i used to do it all the time at your age! but i'd suggest keeping it in your box with your tackle and not in you pocket on route to where you intend to fish,

Tell me what are the obvious reasons for a knife, I have been  course fishing since i was 10 (in the UK) and that was a long time ago and have never used a knife a good pair of scissors is all you need

it would be OK if it was in your fishing box and not in your pocket because everyone will be suspicious and probably call the police, so, your best bet is to carry it in your tackle box, then no one  can complain because you are not using it for another reason, you are just using it for fishing

There is nothing illegal about carrying a pocket knife like you describe.  Everybody ought to have a Swiss Army knife!  

(I'll tell you what, though - you might want to save up your money and get a Leatherman Wave multi-tool.  The knife blade and the pliers are worth the money - especially when fishing, and the other stuff comes in handy, too.  It comes with a sheath you can wear on your belt.)

If you carry it in with your fishing gear I think it would be legal, if you carry it around in your pocket then Id say no its probs illegal, especially with the whole knife crime thing thats going on.

You should be fine, since the blade doesn't lock into position, make sure you keep the knife in your tackle bag and it should be OK, don't go waving it around etc, most states have a website that will explain knife laws and many others, so long as its for fishing purposes it should be fine. Don't try to fillet a fish with a pocket knife as they can close on your fingers.
