I really want to knit this: http://amysbabies.wordpress.com/magnetic-katamari-pattern/ but.. the only pattern I can find is in crochet. Can somebody help me figure out how to knit it? I'm somewhat of a beginner to knitting, so I'm unsure how to make it into a ball. I can knit in the round with DPN if it calls for it. Any suggestions??

  1. To knit a ball one has to know how to do short-rowing.  I have a pattern for you:

    Baby's First Ball     Measurement - 7 " in diameter

    Size 7 knitting needles

    Tension 18 sts and 32 rows = 4 ins.

Instructions:  Garter stitch (Knit all stitches)

      I used primary colors.

        Cast on 28 sts.

1sr row: (right side)  Knit across.

2nd row: K 20. TURN. Leave rem 8 sts on left hand needle.

3rd  row: K 18. TURN. Leave rem 2 sts on left hand needle.

4th  row: K 20. TURN. Leave rem 6 sts on left hand needle.

5th row: K 18. TURN. Leave rem 4 sts on left hand needle.

6th row: K 20. TURN. Leave rem 4 sts on left hand needle.

7th row. K 18. TURN. Leave rem 6 sts on left hand needle.

8th row. K 20. TURN. Leave rem 2 sts on left hand  needle.

9th row. K 18. TURN. Leave rem 8 sts on left hand needle.

10th row: K 20.  Section One is complete. This is knitted in one piece.

With Color #2, work 1st to 10th rows. Sec. Two complete.

With Color #3, work 1st to 10th rows. Sec. Three complete.

With Color #4, work 1st to 10th rows. Sec. Four complete.

Work 8 more Sec. in the same sequence of colors - 3 sec. of each color.   Cast off loosely leaving an end 12 inches long to sew seam.  Thread end thru large eye needle and gather end sts of ball firmly.  Stuff ball firmly.  Sew seam and gather thru sts at other end of ball.  Fasten off securely.   Enjoy!!  You have learned to short-row knittig.     Say thank you!!!

  2. Well, you could learn to crochet; if you can knit, I'm sure you can handle it.  But if you really don't want to crochet, I'd suggest knitting a basic ball pattern and then adding the nubs separately.
