  1. That's called stockinette stitch. It always curls. You can prevent it from curling so much by putting a garter stitch or moss stitch border on each side of the stockinette portion of your project. For a garter stitch border, put about three knit stitches at the beginning and end of every row.

  2. It depends upon what you are making. All the people who suggest a border of seed stitch or garter stitch are correct. However, if you are making a garment that will be sewn together, like a sweater or booties or something else, a border is not needed. When you sew the pieces together, it will look totally appropriate.

    Good luck!

  3. When you sew your garment together and press it, the curl will be gone, however if you are knitting a scarf, you need to create an edge of plain knitting.

  4. If you made something like a scarf, you can block it when it's finished. dampen it (or wash it outright), then pin it flat to an ironing board. As it dries, it should dry flat.

If you're making a sweater, you might want to block each piece before you put it all together.

I really enjoy the seed stitch, and it's very easy, as a border to keep the edges from curling. Let's say you have a large baby blanket, as I do. You knit a border of knit 1, purl 1 for 8 stitches, then you knit almost all the way across your project, stopping 8 stitches before the end of your row.

You repeat your border of knit 1, purl 1 for these remaining stitches.

    Turn your work.

Your next row will be as follows; purl 1, knit 1 and repeated for 8 stitches. Knit all the way across your row until you get to the last 8 stitches. Then you purl 1, knit 1 for all of the remaining 8.

As long as you remember to switch your leading stitches to the opposite of the row before, you will have a seed stitch border.

It's durable, looks very nice and is simple to do.
