I want to knit this: http://electricbiscuitonline.blogspot.com/2005/05/ipods-are-stupid-anyway.html

But I am a beginner and I don't know what size yarn I am supposed to use. Can anyone figure it out?

  1. 3.25mm=size 10 Below is a conversion chart to refer to.

It calls for double knitting yarn which usually reads worsted DK on the label.

  2. worsted weight as in any Red Heart worsted yarns you like the colors of.

  3. 3.25mm needles usually call for finger weight yarn (sock yarn, Bernat would label it a #1, fine yarn) but, it looks like the stitches are tight so I think it's a worsted weight yarn (Bernat would label a #4, medium yarn).

If you have some scraps of different yarns, make your swatch and check your gauge.  15 rows/11st = 4cm in stocking stitch

  4. The best way to figure out what kind of yarn you'll need is to read labels.  The gauge for this one is given.  I've translated it to inches for you, in case you're as American as I am.  A 2" square should be 14 stitches wide and 19 rows high.  Getting 7 stitches per inch on 4mm needles is going to mean a fairly fine yarn.  Red Heart makes a 3-ply baby and a 3-ply sportweight yarn, if you want to stay with that company.

Take along a calculator if you need it, and go to the yarn aisle to read some labels.  If they give the gauge as a 4" square (many American yarns do) you'll need to find one with 28 stitches and 38 rows to make that 4" square.  An iPod case is a tiny project, really, so you'll want a finer yarn.
