  1. This site may have what your looking for:

    http://headhuggers.org/

Click on see all hat patterns.

Check out #8, #17, #20=these use 2 needles and you just sew a seam down the back.

  2. Try this site:

    www.knitting-and.com/knitting/patterns...

    or

    www.knitabit.net/hat14.htm

  3. You're gonna have to work it flat then and seam it.

This site illustrates the concept. (Work up a piece of fabric, with or without shaping, seam the cast-on and bind-off edges together and draw one end of the tube together to form the crown.)

IMO, it is *much* easier to knit hats in-the-round. It's really not too difficult. Check out the vids on YouTube or knittinghelp.com if you're stuck.

ETA: I've googled around and haven't been able to find a skull cap pattern worked flat. I suspect that's b/c it's hard to get that nice, tight fit of a skull cap when you're working flat and can't try it on as you go/have to worry about seaming.

My advice would be to find a nice pattern written for in-the-round knitting that you like, and then adapt it for flat knitting. Just treat each "Round" as a new row and go from there. Remember that you'll have to flip the directions for every other round, as when you knit in-the-round you never turn your work, but when you knit flat you turn your work after each row. Good luck. :)
