Question:

Knitting project ideas for a new Mum?

I am looking for an interesting knitting/crochet pattern/project for a friend who has recently announced her pregnancy. I just know she will receive loads of baby gifts so I wanted to do something for her.

Does anyone have any interesting patterns / projects / ideas that would be a fab gift for a new Mum (due around Xmas time). No baby endeavours please, want something luxurious to perk up the adult :)

  1. How about a shawl/wrap? One of my kids was born in winter and I really needed something to wrap round my shoulders to keep me warm while I was feeding her during the wee small hours of the morning. What a nice friend you must be to think of doing something kind like that!

  2. You should check out the Knitting Pattern Central directory (all patterns are free - they do link to Lion Brand's patterns and Lion Brand requires you to sign-in (100% free) before you can get access to their patterns). The Knitting Pattern Central Directory website is: http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/di...

They have virtually everything conceivable for one to knit.

There is a Crochet version of the above, it appears to be the same vast amounts of patterns, but I'm not as familure with it b/c I dont crochet alot.  The website is: http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/dir...

May I suggest, if you're adventurous enough, a diaper bag for your friend?   Or perhaps diaper covers (for the kid to wear over their diaper)?

Both knitting & crocheting have patterns for diaper bags:

  3. How about a bed jacket:

    Or a neck pillow:

    or an eye pillow:

or a lap Afghan=Lion brand has many patterns to choose from.  How fun and thoughtful of you.:)

  4. I'll second a shawl, a Faroese style shaped shawl will stay on her shoulders while she holds onto baby.  A bed jacket or some fabulous bed socks in a luxury fiber would be wonderful, too.  However, stay away from angora or mohair yarns for a shawl intended for use while she's nursing, since the halo of the fibers may irritate baby's skin and cause a rash.  Merino superwash wool would probably be best since this can be machine washed easily.

  5. Definately a wrap....I had a Feb baby and man is it cold at 2am with the heat off!! You can get some gorgeous fluffy wools and super soft chenille wool.....mmmm yummy and warm!

  6. maybe you could crochet a beanie?

there are a few videos on youtube that i found very help full

  7. Roxy is right - those long winter hours sitting up at night - 3 of my children were January babies so I recall them well.  She will think of you and be so grateful
