Question:

Knitting question:?

I have all of 3 days of experiance with knitting, so this shouldn't be too hard to answer. I'm practising knit stich, with 5 stiches per row. I do about 5 rows, and notice the fabric is twisting. Thinking it will go away once I knit more, I continue. Well, I've got about 12 inches done and the length of my fabric is bearing a significant resemblance to a double-helix or something.

1. Why is that?

2. What can I do to make it go away?

Thanks!

  1. I agree with the first poster, 5 stitches across isn't hardly anything to work with. I'd cast on 40 or so, to really practice. Tension really does play into it. Sounds like when you start a new row you're pulling too tight maybe.... but this is why you're practicing!

I'd also suggest taking your work in to a local craft store, and ask if someone there will look at it for you. They often have classes you can attend, it really helps to both see someone actually knitting, and to have someone else watch you, to see what you may be doing wrong. Good luck and happy knitting! :)

  2. This could be caused by a number of things. One is you are using so few stitches. Cast on about 20 and work with that. You might be pulling the stitches too tight or not tight enough.
