k to the second-to-last st on the second needle.

P second-to-last stitch.

Ok this is what my next step is in making a glove. I am just having trouble with the terminology. What is the second to last stitch? So basically u have 15 sts on each needle and they want to to do what? Knit to second last stitch of needle 2 and then purl one?

  1. The instructions as they are here tell you to knit until you have only two stitches left on the needle in your left hand, then purl the next stitch. So you would knit 13 of the 15 stitches on the left needle purl the 14th stitch.

If you tell me where you are on the glove I might be better able to help. I've never heard of the need to do a different stitch this close to the end of a row unless its some sort of pattern. One of my staples to knit is fingerless gloves as well as socks, so I might be of help to you.

  2. You are defining the thumb gusset here, it's a design element.  You'll knit to the next to last stitch and purl that stitch.  As has been said, this can be translated to k13, p1, then work a lifted make 1 increase, and knit the last stitch.  This is where you get the extra fabric for the thumb to fit in.  If you don't want to use the purl you don't have to, simply put a stitch marker on the needle before you work the stitch so you know where the gusset starts (and most likely on the next needle you'll need one for where it ends) and knit the stitch, m1, knit the next.
