  1. The best yarn for a new knitter is a smooth yarn, in a worsted weight yarn. A pair of size 8 needles will work well with that yarn. Do not try funky yarns or really fuzzy yarn, it is hard to see the stitches.

You can use wool or acrylic, Wool is warmer and looks really nice but some people find it itchy.

The simplest hat is a straight stitch, just cast on 80 stitches, knit back and forth until you have about 9 inches, and then bind off, leaving a long end of yarn. thread the yarn into a yarn needle and run the needle through the bound off stitches, and pull tight, that is the top of the hat, then sew the side seam, and you are done. this is a wicked cute hat.

To learn the basic stitch, go to knittinghelp.com and watch the video, or do a search on youtube, which has some great instructional videos.

You can also buy a starter kit, with needles and yarn included, this may be the best way to start, and the kits come with a how to manual.
