Question:

Knocking sound coming from water well thru pipe to pressure tank. What's causing this?

The sound comes as the pump has filled the pressure tank, and is shutting off. It's been doing this since I bought the house nearly 4 years ago. If it's not broken, I don't want to pay someone to fix it. The well and pump were installed with the house construction, about 25 years ago. It's not coming from the pressure tank, but definitely from the well through the pipe coming into the basement to the pressure tank.

  1. Ron G is exactly right.  Once you pump the pressure tank up with air you will notice a difference right away, and you will have relatively constant water pressure!

  2. Wow. I hope you have caught this in time. What you have is a 'waterlogged' pressure tank. This can cause the pump to destroy it self as well as blow up the pressure tank. Look on the pressure tank and see if it is one that has a bladder in it. If it is just a galvanized tank you can fix it yourself very simply. If it is a bladder style tank then it has to be replaced. In the length of time it has been I would bet that it is a bladder style tank and that the bladder has ruptured.  To fix a galvanized style tank:  Note the maximum pressure that the pump builds up to on the gauge. Turn off the pump. Drain all of the water out of the pressure tank by opening up a faucet somewhere. Leaving the faucet open, pump air into the air valve on the top of the pressure tank. It is just like the air valves on a car tire. When you can hear air starting to bubble out of the pressure tank close the faucet. Continue to pump air in the pressure tank until it reaches in pressure about 4 pounds less than the maximum pressure that the waterpump built up. Turn on pump. It should work normally. Most pressure pumps now have a rubber bladder that prevents this from happening. What is happening to you is that there is no 'air' for the water to be pumped in to and the pump is turning off and on alot with the action of the pressure switch. This will make a sound like a 'water hammer' which it is. It is something to get on right away and not use the water at all until you have replaced the tank or gone through the drill of putting air into the tank. The pump is not made for all this on and off work. Hope this helps.

  3. It's very possible you have what's known as 'Water Hammering'.

  4. I had a hammering in my wall when the toilet flushed and was very loud.  After getting anti hammer device and it not working, I changed the guts in the toilet tank and it was fixed.

    Amazing!
