One of the most important pieces of advice I can offer is to always be aware of least 2 exits from any place you are.  This not only applies to your house, but an office building, a store, a movie theater, a night club, etc...

People are transient in nature and will almost always try to exit a building in an emergency the same way they came in, sometimes even when a closer emergency exit is available.  Take a look around, look for exit signs and see what alternate routes are available.

Be very observant when entering a building.  There is an escape procedure posted at every entrance, exit and elevator.
